Leadership

Owner - board - management - chain of command (OHJ)

The owner-board of directors-management team chain is the top management system of an organisation. When the chain works, direction is clear, decision-making is smooth and management is able to focus on what matters. When the chain fails, strategies fall by the wayside, responsibilities become blurred and the organisation starts to revolve around internal tensions.

Often the problem is not the individual, but the unclear structure: who owns what, who decides what and for how long.

Typical challenges in the OHJ chain

In our work with clients, we repeatedly encounter the same phenomena:

  • Ownership is unclear or contradictory.
  • The role of government is uncertain: operational or strategic?
  • The management team spends time reporting instead of making decisions.
  • The strategy is discussed, but not systematically managed.
  • Expectations between the different levels do not match.
  • Difficult questions are avoided until they pile up.

In these situations, the chain does not support the management, but puts a strain on it. Decision-making slows down, responsibility shifts and focus is lost.

What does a functioning OHJ chain look like?

A well-functioning OHJ chain does not mean a strict bureaucracy or heavy-handed administration. On the contrary: at its best, it clarifies thinking and frees up time for the right things.

In a well-functioning chain:

  • Owners have a common and articulated vision
  • Board focuses on strategy, direction and management support
  • The management team runs the business, not the reporting
  • Clear roles, responsibilities and decision-making rights
  • Discussions are open, but goal-oriented
  • Strategy, leadership and implementation support each other

This enables the organisation to make decisions in time and put them into practice.

How do we help develop the OHJ chain?

We help our customers to make the OHJ chain work as a whole, not as separate forums. The work almost always starts with clarifying the thinking and progresses to concrete models of action.

  • Brightening the will of the owner
We help owners articulate a shared vision of where they want to take the organisation and on what principles. Without this, the board and management have no sustainable basis for decision-making.
  • We clarify the role and work of the board
We support boards to focus on what matters: strategic guidance, management sparring and future issues - not operational micromanagement.
  • We are developing the work of the management team
We help management teams move from reporting forums to decision-making forums. The focus shifts from the past to the future and from presenting issues to thinking together.
  • Building a common rhythm and structure
We will create a clear annual calendar and a forum structure linking strategy, objectives and monitoring.
  • We support you in having difficult conversations
We help bring to the table the issues that are often silenced: roles, responsibilities, trust and power. Without these discussions, the chain will not work.

Shall we discuss further?

The owner-manager-management team chain is the most important management structure in an organisation, and often the most underused. When the chain works, decision-making becomes clearer, management becomes leaner and executive capacity is strengthened.

We help build a functioning OHJ chain where each level knows its role and takes responsibility.
